Mental Health and Spirituality: 16th Philadelphia Trans Health Conference

8/26/2017

I feel so honoured. I was invited to present at the 16th Annual Philadelphia Trans Health Conference. September 7-9, 2017. www.mazzonicenter.org/trans-health

I will be sharing two panels with incredible co-panelists.  I'll be speaking about my path in learning traditional knowledge to help me learn how to de-pathologize mainstream mental health as a Counsellor and Educator. I hope to offer balm, wholeness, and possibility to racialized trans and non-binary communities that have been harmed by mental health systems.

If you want to connect on spirituality and mental health, of multi-faith, secular contemplative practices, let's have tea.

Mindfulness as Social Justice Practice Workshop: Social Venture Institute Hollyhock Expert

I'm feel so honoured. From September 13-17, I will be on one of the beautiful places on earth. Cortes Island, traditional territories of the Klahoose people.

The Social Venture Institute Hollyhock invited me to be an expert on Mindful Social Justice at this years retreat. Please come join me at my workshop:

Mindfulness as Social Justice Practice

Take your social venture to the next level of positive change. The primary focus of this experiential workshop will be to explore mindfulness as a holistic framework for social justice. By centering embodied knowledges found in mindfulness practices, we cultivate courageous leadership by reframing our social discomfort related to power and privilege skilfully. In this way, we can become aware of how our unconscious biases cause oppressive dynamics. Mindful awareness can change our discomfort/guilt/shame to privilege by leveraging our privileges as radical possibilities for social transformation.

This workshop is intended for those who are familiar with anti-oppression ways of
working and interested in the embodiment of social justice business practices.

Respecting Our Pain: A Mindfulness Workshop on Embodied Awareness and Compassion

Sovereignties and Colonialisms: Resisting Racism, Extraction and Dispossession
2015 Critical Ethnic Studies Conference

May 1, 10:45-12:15, Founders Junior Common Room 024E

This experiential workshop will offer participants a way to respect and connect with their pain (emotional, mental, physical, spiritual, inter-generational, inter-relational) with embodied awareness and kindness/compassion. Compassion is defined as the capacity to turn towards pain with kindness. Often, we push away our pain with judgment, fear, and distraction. Reacting to pain in this way can at times be brilliant action to take, but in the long run, these critical life-saving skills can impact our holistic health at great costs. Introducing skills in mindful awareness can offer an embodied way for us to become aware of how we relate to our pain and how to relate to the pain with attitudes of deep self-respect and compassion/kindness. Dominant Western discourses privilege disembodied learning, marginalizes embodied knowledges such as mindfulness; re-centering our many traditional ways of healing decolonizes. It becomes a revolutionary act to embody our awareness/knowing and to turn towards ourselves with compassion in a culture which denies us our dignities in most aspects of our lives.
